Yoga Through the Ages: Yoga History, Philosophy & Sanskrit Virtual Study Series


Meet our friend, Dr. Marcy Goldstein, PhD, a scholar, student, and teacher of the history & philosophy of Yoga and the Sanskrit Language. 

Join us for a four session whirlwind tour through 5000+ years of yoga teachers, texts, and traditions.  We will explore the ancient, premodern, and modern periods of time.  At the final session, we will answer questions such as:

  • Is yoga religion?

  • What about cultural appropriation and appreciation? 

  • Was the Buddha a Buddhist? 

Each week will sprinkle in the correct pronunciation and meaning of key Sanskrit words.  Format is lecture along with time for Q&A discussion and an active chat box to share comments.  Timeline handout of yoga's history provided.  Questions? Email Marcy directly.

Classes will meet in Zoom & class recordings will be available to all folks registered.

*Austin locals, our small studio room at The Retreat (3300 W. Anderson Lane Ste 300, Austin, TX 78757) will be reserved for students to gather together there!

*Chattanooga locals, email Laura about gathering for potluck & study sessions!

More about Marcy:

Marcy is a Jersey girl, mama, wife, yogi, academic, curious soul. . . she attended college in upstate NY & grad school at UC Santa Barbara, and began teaching Sanskrit and the history and philosophies of yoga in the 1990s. She has taught Asian religions and “Yoga Through the Ages.” at UNC Charlotte and Davidson College. She also teaches Sanskrit and history and philosophy of yoga in yoga teacher training programs nationally through Sanskrit Revolution. To design her courses, she draws from her academic training and 20 years of yoga practice.

Her passion is to help people discover the history and fascinating linguistic foundation of yoga.
